SOUTH AFRICA
THE HOME OF THE PHENOMENAL SARDINE RUN
The annual Great Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon which usually occurs during the months of June and July, when massive schools of sardines migrate from the colder waters around the Cape to the warmer waters of Kwa-Zulu Natal to give birth to their offspring. Once they’ve laid their eggs, they return to the Cape, closely followed by thousands of dolphins, birds, fish of prey, whales and sharks. The ocean awakes and the thrill is simply indescribable.
SEASONAL OCEAN ESCAPES
Real African ocean adventure with big doses of magical inspiration – from land to sea – the Sardine Run off the South Africa coast is a sure bet.
Your days start early running out across the mesmerising dark water as the deep red sun rises off the ocean surface. It reminds me of going out on dawn game drives on the savannah watching the wildlife scurry across the plains. But offshore, it’s what lies just under the surface that pulls you in—dolphins whipping the ocean surface into whitecaps, and gannets diving to feed off the sardines that the dolphins bring to the surface. It’s a thrilling spectacle, and you never know what to expect. The sea and weather changes daily, from hot and calm, to windy, rough and cold. But this adds to the sense of exhilarating exploration and high-seas quest. Everything becomes ‘worth it’, when the curtain rises.
